Ping sends an ICMP echo to a host and measures the round-trip time. Enter a hostname or IP to confirm a server or device is reachable on the network and see how quickly it replies. Private and internal addresses are blocked for safety.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean if ping fails?
The host may be down, unreachable, or simply configured to ignore ICMP. Many servers drop ping while still serving web traffic — use the HTTP checker too.
Is round-trip time the same as page speed?
No. Ping measures network latency only; page load also depends on the server and content. Both matter.
What's a normal ping time?
Within a region, single-digit to low tens of milliseconds is typical; intercontinental round trips run 100-300 ms. What matters more is consistency — sudden jumps or wide variation (jitter) point to network trouble.
Why can't I ping a private or internal IP here?
Addresses like 10.x, 192.168.x, 127.0.0.1, and cloud metadata (169.254.169.254) are blocked for security so the tool can't be abused to probe internal networks. Ping those from inside your own network instead.
What's the difference between ping and traceroute?
Ping tells you whether a host replies and how fast; traceroute maps each network hop along the way so you can see where latency or loss is introduced. Use traceroute when ping is slow but you don't know where the delay lives.
