WHOIS domain lookup

Registrar, registration & expiry dates, and nameservers for any domain.

Look up the public registration details for a domain: its registrar, when it was registered, last updated, and when it expires, plus its nameservers and status codes. Great for catching an upcoming expiry or confirming who a domain is registered with.

Frequently asked questions

Why are some contact details hidden?

Most registrars redact registrant contact info for privacy (GDPR/WHOIS privacy). Registrar, dates, nameservers, and status remain public.

Can I get alerted before a domain expires?

Yes — SJ Monitor can watch a domain and alert you well before its expiry date so you never lose it.

What do WHOIS status codes like clientTransferProhibited mean?

They are EPP status codes describing what actions are locked. clientTransferProhibited blocks transfers to another registrar (a common anti-hijack default), while codes like pendingDelete or redemptionPeriod mean the domain is in the process of being released.

Why is some WHOIS data missing or different per domain?

Each registry runs its own WHOIS and exposes different fields; some ccTLDs publish very little, and privacy laws redact more than they used to. Newer queries may also use RDAP, the structured successor to classic WHOIS.

What's the difference between the created, updated, and expiry dates?

Created is when the domain was first registered, updated is the last change to the registration record (not the website), and expiry is when registration lapses unless renewed. Renew before expiry to avoid losing the name.

How is WHOIS different from a DNS lookup?

WHOIS returns registration details — registrar, dates, and status — about who holds the domain. A DNS lookup returns the live records (A, MX, TXT) that route traffic and mail; the two are separate systems.
